This session is geared towards professionals who are unfamiliar with U.S. Copyright Law. It will focus on the fundamentals of the law and the legal exemptions that specifically impact libraries and academia, including 17 U.S.C. § 107, 17 U.S.C. § 108, and 17 U.S.C. § 109.

Breakout Sessions
Campus Copyright Issues Beyond the Classroom
This session will highlight some common ways that copyright pops up in faculty, staff, and student activities outside of the classroom setting. Learn more about copyright considerations for public film screenings and streaming services and live music events. This session will also cover the use of images in promotional flyers, handouts, and banners by university units and student groups and the sharing of content on university and non-university websites, such as YouTube.
Section 108 is one of the limitations on exclusive rights in United States copyright law. It applies to libraries and archives that meet certain conditions and allows for specified activities commonly provided as services. This session will serve to review of a few of the basic, frequently-utilized portions of this exception, as well as illuminate some of the not-so-well-known aspects. The objective of this session is to clear up as much confusion as possible and to present some frequently-asked questions as real-life library scenarios.
Copyright and Open Educational Resources
This session will explore the copyright and license issues related to Open Educational Resources (OER).
Copyright and Online Education
This session will deal with how copyright affects online courses and materials used in instruction. Distance learning is still a relatively new frontier, and copyright plays an important role. Topics covered will include TEACH Act, leveraging licensed material from the library, intellectual property of material produced for online courses, and the learning management system and copyright.
Crafting Copyright Policy
A group of panelists will discuss best practices for crafting copyright policies for libraries and academic institutions.
